In addition to insulting Las Cruces natives, Axl stopped the band as Matt kicked into "Mr Brownstone." He gave a quick speech essentially saying if anything (thrown from the crowd) hit the band, the show would be over. The crowd (at least people around me in the pit), a little pissed as GNR was an hour late, began getting REALLY upset. Complete buzzkill but Slash got on the mic and said something to the effect of "Let's be cool", "It's cool" and "Let's have a good time." I really think Slash saved the band from having another St Louis or Montreal.

Also, Metallica blew the doors off the place.
